Compost, collection intervals & extra bins
We believe and hope that with a good routine for sorting and source and sorting food waste, you’ll be able to manage with the 240 litre dual compartment bin you’ve been issued with.
Spot check analyses carried out in Kramfors show that the typical household has 15 kilos of waste in its bin at each emptying and that almost 25% of it consists of packaging material that must be sorted out at a recycling station. In other words, there is plenty of room for most people to reduce the amount of waste.
As a benchmark for calculating your need for waste space, there are standard amounts produced by Avfall Sverige. These show how volumes of residual waste + food waste are calculated for households with different amounts of waste. The example applies to collection every 14 days for households in apartment buildings with curbside collection for packaging and waste paper, but can also be considered representative for detached households when sorting out packaging material.
Small: 90-110 litres
Normal: 100-120 litres
High: 130-160 litres
The old 370-litre containers will be taken out of use in connection with the introduction of food waste collection.
We are, however, aware that there may be times in life when the volume for residual waste needs to be increased. So, just as before, you can order extra volume and have an extra dual compartment bin delivered to you for an additional charge.
You can place this order in the e-service “waste bins, replacements and applications”. External link. You will need to place this order again once the new bin has been issued and your old one taken out of use.

Home composting
If you compost your food waste at home and have reported this to the municipality, you can continue with this as usual. As composting constitutes a biological treatment, it falls within the scope of what is an approved treatment under the Government’s decision..
All one- and two-family houses will have a dual compartment bin, and this also applies if you compost your food waste at home. When the food waste compartment is empty, you will not pay a weight-based charge for this. If, at any time, you need to dispose of your food waste somewhere other than in your compost, you can sort it, have it taken away for treatment and only pay by weight for the time(s) that this happens.
Extended collection interval
If you have been granted an extended collection interval, you will retain this interval even after 1 March.
