School transport and bus cards

Your child is entitled to school transport if he or she goes to the school specified by the municipal authority and meets the criteria laid out in the school transport regulation.

You can also apply for school transport for your child if they have alternating residence, there are special transport conditions or in other exceptional circumstances. School transport is not available to and from wraparound care.

Primary and lower secondary school

Children in preschool class are provided with school transport if the distance between home and school is at least 2.0 km.

Children in years 1 to 3 are provided with school transport if the distance between home and school is at least 2.5 km.

Children in years 4 to 6 are provided with school transport if the distance between home and school is at least 3.0 km.

Children in years 7 to 9 are provided with school transport if the distance between home and school is at least 4.0 km.

The criteria for a child to be provided with public transport are always assessed on an individual basis. In most cases, the guardian of the child needs to make an application to the municipal authority or the school. You should apply when your child first starts school, but you do not need to apply again every academic year if you have had your application approved and there has been no change in circumstances.

Upper secondary school

You are eligible for a bus card if the distance to school is at least 6 km. You are not eligible for a bus card if you are receiving accommodation allowance. If there is no bus service available for all or part of your journey, you can receive a cash travel allowance.

Applying for a travel allowance

Students who have to travel at least 6 km from home to the nearest boarding point can apply for a travel allowance. Students who are unable to travel by bus for medical or other reasons, supported by a doctor’s certificate, can receive a travel allowance of an amount equivalent to a bus card.

School transport for temporary disability

If your child needs school transport because of a temporary disability that is the result of something that was planned, such as a planned operation, contact the school or the municipal authority administrator.

Accident insurance

If the temporary disability is the result of an accident, however, report the injury to If Skadeförsäkringar and provide evidence in the form of a doctor’s certificate of the need for school transport.

How to apply

Apply using the services under related links. There you can apply for school transport, travel allowance and self-transport compensation.

For students at primary, lower secondary and upper secondary school

You do not need to make an application. The headteacher decides on school transport for students at primary, lower secondary and upper secondary school.

If you are unhappy with the municipal authority’s decision

You can appeal against the municipality authority’s decision on school transport by making an administrative appeal.
